Commodore

People say that it is very difficult to put pen to paper. Let me assure you that it is equally difficult to put my 2 index fingers to keyboard! The art of writing is dying with the easy availability of mobile phones and texting not to mention those very complicated tweeting and facebook forums!!
Not an excuse but my apologies for the dearth of “Commodore’s” postings this year.
To those of you who have supported the Disabled Access fund a big thank you. It now stands at over €5000 and fundraising will continue over the coming months.
The Talbot Hotel winter doubles tennis competition is in full swing at this time. (Do we blame the “new partner” for any losses or congratulate a great new partnership for the wins?) This is the dilemma but all I know is that it is a fun sociable tournament with great repartee across the net.
The Sunday Winter Sailing Series started at 2pm this year due to the tides but someone forgot to tell the wind! Let’s hope that the weather will be more favourable in the coming Sundays as this series always creates great pictures in the harbour and estuary. As usual homemade soup and rolls are served in club at lunchtime on Sundays. Read the rest of this entry »

3TEK Club championships.
By editor on October 3, 2011
On a glorious sunny day last Saturday week, Wexford tennis club otherwise known locally as ‘Flushing meadows’ played host to another remarkable and truely absorbing day of tennis, with the finals of the 3TEK Club championships. There were 20 finals played throughout the day, and there were a few classic matches which will live long in the memory (at least for those of us who didn’t lash into the crème de menthe cocktails straight afterwards). WEXFORD SENIOR TENNIS OPEN 2011
By editor on August 17, 2011
Tennis was alive and well at the Boat Club in Wexford over the August Weeekend with over 230 players at all levels taking to the courts throughout the town and county. One of the continuing attractions of the tournament is that it is played over the 3 day weekend and uses as many as 30 courts including at least 20 generously handed over to the Club by private owners from the town for the weekend.
Wexford had the largest Mens Championship draw of any tennis open played outside Dublin this summer with 23 players registered and 20 playing. Included in the entry were 4 full-time Tennis Ireland Academy players, current Davis Cup players and many ex Davis Cup players, and national u/18 Champions, all chasing the biggest prize pot outside Read the rest of this entry »

Junior Tennis Open 2011
By editor on August 17, 2011
From Saturday the 6th to Saturday the 15th of August Wexford Harbour Boat & Tennis Club played host to this year’s Junior Tennis Open. The event was a resounding success boasting an entry of over 180 juniors, some flocking in from as far away as France and even the US. While these didn’t commute every day, we did have several juniors making daily trips from as far north as Dublin and even Dundalk. So why would any parent willingly set their alarm for 5am to make a three hour journey to our Slaney-side courts?? What was it that made such a journey worth while??
Perhaps it was the venue, a renowned tennis hot–spot in the sunny southeast; or perhaps it was the tuck-shop, supplying a calorie count sufficient to last the players until the Open 2012. Or maybe it was Eric Pinaqui’s famous ‘carrot & coriander’ soup that kept the entrants coming back day after day. However judging by the kids themselves it wa Read the rest of this entry »

Tennis Snippets

The finals of the Business House tennis league were held at Wexford tennis club on Friday evening last. There were 24 teams competing in the tournament this year representing all aspects of the Wexford business community, and there was plenty of high quality tennis played over the last few weeks. This was certainly the case in the final of the Class 4 (novice section) where the Ducksies led by Gavin Buggy had a fairly comfortable victory over The No name team led by Eamon Kelly. Other successful teams on the night included Screw Balls led by a youthful Shane Jenkins who defeated th Read the rest of this entry »

Sailing Championship Season Starts
By editor on April 28, 2011
The 2011 sailing championship kicked off last weekend with the Laser Class Munster Championships held in Baltimore Sailing Club. Wexford Harbour Boat and Tennis Club had a representative in each of the three fleets; Standard (Dereck Joyce), Radial (Keelan Conway), and 4.7 (Rónan Jones). They all sailed well in the variable conditions and all recorded some impressive mid fleet results.
The next Laser Class event is the Ulsters in May, followed by the Leinsters in Dun Laoighaire in July and the Connaughts in Wexford also in July, followed by the Nationals in Lough Derg at the end of August Read the rest of this entry »
