Local Wins First Kitesurf Course Racing Event

By editor on September 2, 2010

Wexford Sailor Thomas O’Reilly came first at the IKSA Kitesurf course racing event held in Duncannon on the 18th of August.  With the improvement in upwind ability of kites and boards, course racing on Kites is now a recognised class by the the Council of the International Sailing Federation.  This was the first successful race held in Ireland in which 20 kiters from around Ireland competed.  Thomas’ early years sailing and teaching in WHBTC definitely stood to him in the race as he was a good 3/4 of a mile ahead of the next competitor when crossing the finishing line much to the confusion and applaud of spectators.

Hopefully a winter series will be run at Wexford beaches this year and a few kiters can be encouraged into sailing to improve their racing rules knowledge, but tell Mr. Coulter not to worry as we won’t be looking for a Portsmouth Yardstick for Sunday club racing any time soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Laser National Champion of Ireland Ronan Wallace

By editor on September 1, 2010

Ronan Wallace National laser Champion of Ireland

Ronan Wallace is the new National Laser Champion after a testing regatta held at Ballyholme Yacht Club on Belfast Lough from 26th to 29th August. The Laser is the men’s single handed Olympic boat. The four day event started in fresh conditions with a total entry of 126 boats. The steady Northerly wind allowed the race officer Robin Gray to set a course which changed little over the day. With few shifts, tactical gains upwind were limited but the racing was close with Ronan finishing the day with a win in the third race and overall a more consistent performance leaving him leading by one point overnight.

Day two was a lighter affair with a change to Westerlies. The less experienced sailors had problems handling the lifting current which led to multiple recalls Read the rest of this entry »

Wexford Tennis Open August Weekend 2010

By editor on August 5, 2010

August Weekend Organiser

Wexford Harbour Boat & Tennis Club (WHBTC) hosted the annual Senior Open Tennis tournament on the August Weekend.  With over 230 players playing in 300 events, Tournament Referee Bernie Morrissey declared the weekend a great success for the Club.

With the 200 players using 25 courts all around the county from Saturday to Monday this was a very busy weekend. Boat Club Commodore, Miriam Geraghty, thanked the many volunteers and the outside court owners for their support over the years.  With only 4 courts at the Boat Club, it would not be possible to host so many players without the use of these generously-given courts.

Wexford Tennis Open 2010 & BBQ returns to Boat Club

By editor on July 22, 2010

August Weekend Organiser

Yes folks, after months of high level negotiations that would leave the Croke Park agreement in the shade, weary tennis representatives finally emerged just before dawn from the club house (after another all night session!!) to announce that the infamous August Bank holiday BBQ would be returning to the Boat club.  For the last few years the BBQ has had a very successful run in the Riverbank house hotel, but a bit like St. Patrick returning to Ireland, it was felt that the time was right to bring the event back home.   So if you can still shake the booty, then get ready to party!!

On the playing front, tennis is getting lots of attention at the moment with Louk Sorensen and Conor Niland qualifying for the Australian Open earlier in the year and making great progress in the Qualifiers for the French Open.  Read the rest of this entry »

The Mermaid Fleet are preparing to sail in the 41st Mermaid Week in Foynes from 31st July to 6th August.  Derek Joyce in No. 187 Zuleika is expected to represent Wexford, with 40 boats coming from clubs in Sligo, Dublin and of course Foynes Yacht Club.  There is a dedicated website set up for Mermaid Week and this will have live results and information on events as they happen.  www.dublinbaymermaid.org/foynes2010.

Wexford Sailor Dick Ward had much success in Mermaids during the 1970’s including wins at Mermaid Week in Foynes.  To see some of his archives including photos of the boat club and newspaper articles from the 60’s and 70’s go to www.dublinbaymermaid.org and click on History.

MERMAIDS

By editor on June 8, 2010

A class of sailing boat almost as rare as the mythical sea creature.

Nine boats for a two day regatta! Mysterious be the ways of the Lord, the Mermaid Class and the the W.H.B.T.C. Can’t see the sense of it myself but maybe I’m missing something.

The racing was very good if you were Derek Joyce, Brian Fenlon or Ronan  Wallace. Not so hot for the rest.

Well organised and executed by Paul Ebrill and Mike Doyle and their respective teams both on and off the water it was an object lesson in how to run a regatta.

The two races on Saturday, sailed in testing conditions, with ever changing wind directions, were won by Joyce and co. but not without a bit of a struggle. 77, 185 and 186 all had some speed and 77 was alittle unfortunate in the second race not to have held on for a win. Rule 1, stay between Read the rest of this entry »

North and East Coast Club Championships

By editor on May 21, 2010

Is that the bottom

Earlier this year WHBTC along with 21 other clubs received an invitation from Howth Yacht club to enter a team in the above competition. This was the inaugural running of the event and in the end 10 teams from the East coast entered.

Brian Fenlon kindly agreed to take on the role of skipper and soon had team of four together when he was joined by Dermot O’Morochoe, Michael Conway and Eoin Brennan. The competition was sailed in the ISA Sailfleet J80’s and only Brian had any previous experience in that class. Michael Jones very kindly lent his Formula the week before the event for some practice in the Ferry Reach on a calm sunny evening. Notwithstanding this far from ideal preparation the crew felt comfortable about taking on the teams from the rest of the invited clubs. Eoin Brennan went to the briefing on Friday evening to Read the rest of this entry »

Mixed Doubles Tennis and Food night, & Austin Channing League

By editor on May 21, 2010

Tony Dolan PRO Tennis

On the Bank Holiday Monday, the Wexford tennis club held a very successful Mixed Doubles Tennis and Food night.  The purpose of the event was to have a fun tennis day to allow members to forget all about bank bailouts, NAMA, and the pros and cons of short selling Greek junk bonds.  On what was a pleasant sunny afternoon, there was plenty of competitive tennis.  However, some members took the whole event a bit too seriously with Joe Corrigan arriving with two private masseurs to deal with his ongoing sports related injuries, well that’s what he told the rest of us!

On the ladies side, there was a starring performances from none other than Mary Maguire who stormed to victory playing some wonderful serve & volley tennis along the way, while Joe Corrigan obviously gained an unfair advantage from his little helpers above, with an absolutely stunning victory on the men’s side of the competition.  Read the rest of this entry »
